Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination visited Brazil, the only country that has not yet achieved the WHO target of elimination, for two weeks from August 4. Focusing mainly on the Mato Grosso and Pernambuco, states where leprosy is prevalent, he met and exchanged views with senior officials concerning leprosy elimination measures.
Major activities during his visit included the following.
・Attended the "Leprosy Dialogue Event" sponsored by Novartis Foundation.
・Met with Minister of Health, Dr. Arthur Chioro and Vice Minister Dr. Antonia Nardi. (See photo above.)
・Met with Mr. Jorge Vianna, Upper House parliamentarian of State of Acre.
・Met with Mr. Antonio Jose Ferreira, National Secretary for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Department of Human Rights.
・Met with Dr. Manfred Gobel of the German Leprosy and TB Relief Association (GLRA/DAHW).
・Accompanied a nurse, Mr. Mello in the State of Mato Grosso on medical examinations and home visits to search for leprosy patients. (See photo.)
・Visited the International Association for Integrity Dignity and Economic Development (IDEA).
・Met with Leoardo Albuquerque, Mato Grosso parlimentarian.
・ Met with Dr. Iran Costa Director of Health, State of Pernambuco.
・ Visited Hospital Geral da Mirueira, a leprosy hospital.
・ Attended the meeting of the Movement of Reintegration
of Persons Afflicted by Hansen's Disease (MORHAN)
