首都バクーから約70キロ離れたところに、ウンバキ・ハンセン病療養所があり旧ソ連時代には、南コーカサス（現在のジョージア・アルメニア・アゼルバイジャン3カ国の地域）地方を含めてハンセン病の治療にあたる施設はここひとつしかなく、最多時の1960年から70年代には全域から200人近い患者が集まったと言われている。

In Azerbaijan, about 70 km distant from the capital, Baku, is the Umbaki leprosy sanatorium. In the time of the former Soviet Union, it was the only leprosy sanatorium in the southern Caucasus, treating cases from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. At its peak, in the 1960s and 1970s, there were around 300 patients.
