Although China achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (defined by the WHO as a prevalence rate of less than 1 case per 10,000 people) in 1998, there remain over 600 leprosy "recovery villages" in the country. At a student work camp in a village in Foshan city, Guangdong Province in 2009, villagers and students are like one big family. Such exchanges are one approach to reducing the stigma and discrimination that continue to exist in society.
