エジプトは1994年にWHOの制圧基準（人口1万人あたりの登録患者が1人未満）を達成しています。しかし、ハンセン病患者や回復者、その家族への偏見が根強く残っており、国内にあるハンセン病療養所に住む人々が社会に復帰することは難しい状況と言われている。

Egypt achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (defined by the WHO as a prevalence rate of less than 1 case per 10,000 people) in 1994. But people affected by leprosy and their families still encounter deep-rooted stigma, while for those who live in the country's leprosariums, returning to society is said to be difficult.
