Ethiopia achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (defined by the WHO as a prevalence rate of less than 1 case per 10,000 people) in 2000. But in 2015, it detected 3,970 new cases -- the sixth highest figure in the world. Meanwhile, the idea that the disease is a curse or divine punishment encourages stigma and discrimination, with the result that people affected by the disease may be rejected by their families and the community, cutting off opportunities for education and employment and forcing them to beg for a living.
