マリは2001年にWHO（世界保健機関）が定める公衆衛生上の問題としてのハンセン病の制圧（有病率が人口1万人あたり1人未満）を全国レベルで達成。首都バマコ近郊にはカティ保健所とマルソー研究所と呼ばれていたマリ・ワクチン開発センターがある。
