Myanmar achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (defined by the WHO as a prevalence rate of less than 1 case per 10,000 people) in 2003.There are said to be some 300,000 people affected by leprosy in the country, of whom between 40,000 to 60,000 are living with disabilities. In 2015, around 2,500 new cases were reported, the ninth highest total in the world.
