Nepal achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (defined by the WHO as a prevalence rate of less than 1 case per 10,000 people) in 2010. The country's only leprosy sanatorium, Kokana, is 45 minutes by car from Kathmandu. It was established by the king in 1857. As of 2014, it was home to around 100 people affected by leprosy and their families.
