Niger achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (defined by the WHO as a prevalence rate of less than 1 case per 10,000 people) in 2002. In the capital, Niamey, there is a national center for dermatology and leprosy and on the outskirts of the capital a village of people affected by leprosy called Koira Tegui.
