Culion Island in the Philippines was designated as a leprosy colony in 1906. It later became the model for the Nagashima Aiseien leprosarium, located on an island in Japan's Inland Sea. These photos are from the 100th anniversary of Culion's founding as a leprosy colony, when scenes of the first patients being brought to the island were recreated. Culion is also home to a museum and archives, where medical instruments, photos and other items from the island's past history as a colony are displayed.
