ルーマニアには、近年ハンセン病の新規患者は出ていないが、東部のティキレスティ（首都ブカレストから車で約5時間）にこの国唯一の療養所がある。名前はティキレスティ療養所。第一次世界大戦後の1928年に再建され、当時の患者数は約180名、患者用の家屋が47軒、映画館もあるほど賑やかだったとのこと。現在は48歳から86歳の回復者が16名ほど暮らしている（2014年現在）。

Romania has seen no new cases of leprosy in recent years, but in the east of the country, about 5 hours' drive from the capital Bucharest, is the country's only leprosarium in Tichilesti. The current hospital dates back to 1928, when there were some 180 patients, 47 residences for patients and even a cinema. In 2014, when these photographs were taken, there were 16 residents, ranging in age from 48 to 86.
