タイは1994年にWHO（世界保健機関）が定めたハンセン病患者が国レベルで人口1万人あたり1人未満という制圧目標を達成している。タイで最初に建設されたハンセン病施設は「チェンマイ　ライ患者保護施設」で、アメリカの長老派宣教師のジェームス･マッケン博士が1908年に設立した。この地を求めて、タイ全土はもとより、中国やラオス、ミャンマーからも患者が訪ねてきたとのこと。

Thailand achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (defined by the WHO as a prevalence rate of less than 1 case per 10,000 people) in 1994. The first facility in Thailand for persons affected by leprosy dates back to 1908, when American missionary Dr. James McKean established a leprosy colony in Chiangmai. It would come to see patients from not just Thailand but also China, Laos and Myanmar.
